*****How it made****
Each Harmony bowl is a living testament to artisanal dedication, unfolding as a tactile journey through time honored craftsmanship. Skilled artisans whose hands carry decades of wisdom begin by selecting premium clay, its texture akin to fine sand beneath their fingertips. At the potter’s wheel, they coax a single clay color into form, the rhythmic spin creating a vessel that balances symmetry with organic flow. Every curve is intentional, a nod to both functional design and aesthetic harmony, as the artisans adjust pressure and angle to ensure the bowl’s walls are thin yet resilient. Once shaped, the bowl rests in a controlled environment, drying slowly to prevent cracking. This delicate phase takes days, during which the clay transitions from malleable to firm, preparing for its first transformation: a bisque firing at 800°C. The kiln, glowing like a hearth, infuses the bowl with initial strength, turning the raw clay into a sturdy base. Yet the true magic emerges in the next step: meticulous hand carving. Using tiny tools, artisans etch intricate patterns—think swirling waves, bamboo stalks, or geometric motifs into the bisque surface, each groove a homage to Cizhouware traditions that span centuries. The carvings aren’t just decoration; they’re a narrative, whispering stories of ancient tea rituals. Here, the yin-yang philosophy takes physical form. A contrasting clay color, often a deep earth tone against cream, is pressed into the carved recesses, filling each line with intentional contrast. This step symbolizes the balance of opposing forces dark and light, old and new melding into a cohesive whole. The excess clay is smoothed away, revealing a design that seems to float beneath the surface. To finish, a transparent glaze is brushed on, its consistency like liquid glass, sealing the carvings and ensuring a silky touch. The final act unfolds in a kiln fired to 1280°C, a temperature that turns the glaze into a glossy armor and fuses the clays into a single, durable entity. For hours, the bowl bakes in this volcanic heat, emerging transformed: the glaze shimmering, the carvings defined, and the yin-yang contrast vivid. From start to finish, this process spans a month 30 days of patience, precision, and passion. The result is more than a bowl; it’s a functional art piece, each imperfection a fingerprint of its handmade origin, inviting tea drinkers to hold centuries of craft in their palms.
