The inspiration for this series of ceramic sculptures crafted by the artist stems from the timeworn walls in the southern countryside of the artist’s native place. Those walls, with their mottled forms and hues, are like fragments of memories from childhood, which are gracefully transposed onto clay slabs with the artist’s sentiment and remembrance. The coloring process is akin to a fascinating exploration into the interplay of colors. Through a technique reminiscent of the layering method in oil painting, a truly remarkable and distinct color is brought to life. In the manifestation of the texture and the artisanship of these works, the artist unfolds a kind of profundity and delicacy that is inherently feminine, thus forging an ineffable order within the seeming chaos.

During the creative journey, the artist commences by fashioning clay into slabs. In accordance with the envisioned design, these slabs are then deftly cut into shapes befitting the intended sculpture. Subsequently, slurry serves as the adhesive that binds these slabs closely together, gradually giving shape to the embryonic form of the sculpture. Instead of employing traditional paintbrushes, the artist employs pieces of cloth to delicately layer colors one upon another. In the course of this coloring process, there are moments when some colors are inadvertently rubbed off, resulting in a natural flaking effect that imparts an air of rustic charm and authenticity to the work. Eventually, after undergoing the intense heat of 1320 degrees Celsius in the kiln, the sculptures emerge in their present resplendent guise.

What sets these works apart is the artist’s idiosyncratic practice of pulverizing flawed finished ceramics into fine granules and incorporating them into the carefully prepared ceramic pigments. This unique approach endows the colored sculptures with a special textural quality that seems to tell a story of its own. Moreover, the selection and layering of different colors are entirely dictated by the artist’s spontaneous inspiration at any given time, ensuring that each individual piece is a singular and precious limited edition, a unique artistic expression waiting to be discovered and cherished by discerning eyes.
