Creative Pottery Mug Handle Ideas: A Step-by-Step Tutorial
A mug is just a bowl until it gets a handle. The handle defines the personality of the cup. If you are tired of the standard “C” shape and are looking for fresh pottery mug handle ideas, you’ve come to the right place.
In this post, Jingdezhen ceramic artist will take you behind the scenes in our studio. She will show you how to attach a decorative knotted handle that is both sturdy and stylish. Plus, stay tuned until the end—we might have gotten a little too creative with our last piece!
Step 1: Shape Your Handle
First, create the shape. Instead of pulling a traditional handle, try rolling a clay coil. In this video, we form a loose, artistic knot. This adds a unique sculptural element to the mug.
Note: Make sure the moisture level of your handle matches your mug (Leather Hard) before attaching.

Step 2: Determine Placement
Hold the handle up to the mug to find the perfect balance. Once you are happy with the position, use a needle tool or a triangle knife to lightly mark the outline where the handle will touch the cup.

Step 3: Score the Surface
This is the most important step for durability. Use a tool to scratch (“score”) the surface inside the marks you just made. This creates a rough texture that acts like Velcro for the clay.

Step 4: Attach with Support
Apply a little water or slip (liquid clay) to the scored area. Press the handle firmly onto the mug.
Pro Tip: Look at the hand inside the cup! Always support the wall of the mug from the inside while pressing from the outside. This prevents the cup from warping.

Step 5: Reinforce the Seam
Use a wooden modeling tool to blend the clay from the handle into the mug body. You can add a tiny coil of clay around the joint to ensure a strong bond. Smooth it out so there are no cracks.

Step 6: The Final Polish
Finally, use a damp brush to gently wipe the connection points. This removes tool marks and gives your mug a clean, professional finish.
